When Kobus first joined the Run Walk For Life Fourways branch in January 2025, it was simply for a bit of exercise. A successful web developer running his own business, his days had become increasingly sedentary over the years. Although he had been a runner at school, life and work had slowly replaced activity with long hours behind a screen.

Eventually Kobus began to feel the effects. He was constantly tired and generally unwell, but couldn’t quite understand why. A visit to the doctor brought the answer: Type 2 diabetes. Like many people facing this diagnosis, Kobus was told that lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, would be essential in managing the condition.
That’s when Run Walk For Life became part of his story.
Kobus initially joined through his wife, who had friends at the Fourways branch. He began by walking during the sessions, gradually building his strength and confidence. With the careful guidance and encouragement of Beth, the Fourways branch leader, Kobus slowly transitioned from walking to running. Beth monitored his progress closely, ensuring that he moved forward safely and steadily.
The results have been remarkable. By consistently tracking his health and committing to regular exercise, Kobus has reduced his average blood sugar reading from around 15 to 8, a huge improvement and a testament to the power of persistence.
Just four months after joining Run Walk For Life, Kobus achieved his first 5km distance run. Since then, he has participated in two races, the Pink Race for Cancer and the Chilli Marathon, proudly completing the 5km distance in both.

But Kobus’ journey has become about more than just personal health.
One of the greatest rewards has been sharing the experience with his 12-year-old son, Brandon, who also joined the Fourways branch. Brandon has already made history at the branch as the youngest member ever to complete the introductory phase and start walking on the road.
Kobus is deeply grateful to long-time road leaders Fred and Mandy, who walk alongside Brandon to ensure his safety and encourage his progress. The whole branch enjoys celebrating Brandon’s growing enthusiasm and the small wins that come with improving distance and time.
When asked what Run Walk For Life has taught him, Kobus answers simply: “To vasbyt! Slow and steady, never give up, keep going to the end.”
Running has given Kobus far more than improved fitness. It has increased his energy for everyday life, strengthened his health, and created a shared passion between father and son.
What Kobus appreciates most is that Run Walk For Life allows everyone to start at their own pace. The welcoming atmosphere, supportive community and ability to track progress over time make every session something to look forward to. Being recognised for his effort and commitment at the Fourways year-end function was an added highlight.
Kobus’ story is a reminder that it’s never too late to start, and that sometimes the smallest step can lead to the biggest change.
If you’ve been thinking about becoming more active, Run Walk For Life Fourways is the place to begin your journey.
