From 600m to 15km: Inspiring Transformations at Run Walk for Life Brackenfell

by Enrique Grobbelaar

Every fitness journey starts with a single step—and at Run Walk for Life Brackenfell, Engela Fourie and Grizelda Bothma are proof of just how powerful that step can be.

Engela started at 145 kg and is now 115 kg, while Grizelda has gone from 125 kg to 96 kg. But their journeys are about far more than just weight loss.

Engela’s Journey

Engela began with a 600m walk, completed in 7.5 minutes, with the simple goal of one day finishing a 5km.

Through consistency and determination, she has now covered over 1,000 km, completed multiple 10km races, and recently finished two 15km races. Her next goal: her first half marathon.

Along the way, she has gained not just fitness, but confidence, discipline, and a sense of inner peace.

Grizelda’s Journey

Grizelda started with just 400m in 5 minutes, often saying that “everything pains.” But she kept showing up.

Today, she has completed several half marathons and is transitioning from walker to runner. She’s a regular on the Western Province racing scene and is known for her energy and positivity—always greeting others with, “Hello my favourites!”

After a recent 15km race, she shared:

“Everything was wonderful—the weather, the route, the company… I’ve found my sweet spot in the 15km!”

The Takeaway

Together, Engela and Grizelda have each lost over 25 kg and completely transformed their health and lifestyles.

Their journeys are a reminder that progress takes time—but with consistency, anything is possible.

Start small. Keep going. The results will come.
