What makes Run/Walk For Life and eatForLife’s annual FitSlim Challenge different from the many similar weight-loss initiatives that are being undertaken at any given time is its focus on changing the lifestyle of the people who decide to take up the challenge of improving their health.
With a focus on losing weight and on fitness – this combination is thanks to a tailored eating plan from eatForLife and Run/Walk For Life’s weekly fitness sessions – the FitSlim Challenge is geared towards making a real change in the lives of participants.
This year’s FitSlim Challenge, which took place from 2 September to 26 October, seems to have kick-started this metamorphosis of body and mind for many of the people who took part in it – and it shows: FitSlim 2019 had more than double the amount of participants that it had last year, with a combined total weight loss of 2,839 kilograms.
This is, ultimately, a challenge that promises great rewards to the winners, and in this regard we are grateful to the many sponsors that made this year’s FitSlim Challenge possible.
Without further ado, we’d like to introduce you to this year’s regional winner in the North West Province, Susan van Dyk of the Rustenburg RWFL branch. Susan wins one night’s accommodation for two at the Ons Dorpshuis Guesthouse, one night’s accommodation and dinner for two at Deo Volente, a family photo shoot, calf sleeves from Compressport, one month free RWFL and EFL membership and a FloCup.
We had a chance to sit down with Susan to discuss her journey towards better health during the FitSlim Challenge 2019.
What has always been your biggest challenge when it comes to managing your weight?
To stick to the diet. To eat all the healthy food while the rest of the family can enjoy chips and sweets.
How did the FitSlim Challenge help you to improve your weight and overall health?
To start a new diet that’s so easy to follow. No strange food that I don’t usually buy. The diet is healthy and did not take out carbs, although it helped me to eat it in moderation. Losing 18 kg in eight weeks is the best achievement I have ever had.
How did you stay motivated throughout the challenge?
In my third week, a fellow club member showed me a picture of himself, very overweight (146 kg). Now his weight is below 78 kg. He said to me, if he could do it, I can do it, too. That day, I decided I’m in it to win it! This motivated me every time I wanted to cheat. In the sixth week, I took the lead on the leaderboard, and then nothing could come in my way. Once I’ve finished losing the weight, I will have an entirely new wardrobe.
Were you a Run/Walk For Life member before the challenge?
Yes, I joined at the start of August 2019.
What do you like most about Run/Walk For Life?
The group sessions. The motivation we get from Hetta while walking, makes us do an extra kilometre. I had my photo in the local newspaper after doing the Om-die-Dam 5-kilometre. Without the love and support of Hetta, I wouldn’t have joined the FitSlim Challenge – and now we’re part of the family!
Do you have any secrets or tips that you would like to share with people who are struggling with their weight?
NEVER say you can’t! Find a diet that suits you, stick to it and never lose hope in yourself. Focus on the first 5 kg, not the 50 kg that’s left to lose. There are a lot of water enhancers on the market – get it and start drinking water. Lots of it! Set a reasonable goal for yourself, and start winning while you’re losing. Get your podium position. If I can do it, you can do it, too!
